Dr. Surya Prakash Upadhyay received Ph.D in 2011 from IIT Bombay. His Ph.D. research explored the emergence of spiritual tele-gurus in contemporary Hinduism. His research concentrates on the ideas of well-being and self-care practices in urban India. His areas of research interest include exploration of urban religion in post-reform India which involves: sociology of religion; urban sociology; urban middle class; religious and ethnic violence; and transformations in Indian society in post-liberalization period. His current research explores urban subjectivities, new economies in post-reform India; and theories of cosmopolitanism. Dr. Upadhyay has worked with Tata Institute of Social Sciences and has been recipient of a few prestigious fellowships which includes Charles Wallace India Trust Fellowship in Social Anthropology ( 2013) and Independent Fellowship (2007) awarded by Sarai-CSDS.
