Prof. Balasundaram Subramanian has joined as visiting professor in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Born in Madras, 8 June 1952, did his initial schooling and collegiate studies at Madras. He did his Graduate Studies between 1975 and 1981 at the Karnatak University Dharwad and at the University of Karlsruhe (as DAAD Scholar).
His teaching career spans nearly four decades and three institutions (the Madras Christian College, the IIT Madras and the JNU New Delhi). At the IIT Madras he taught and established a wide range of humanist disciplines: Communication Studies, Rhetoric, German Language, German Studies, European Studies, European Philosophy, Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Technology, Nomistics etc.
He has also taught at universities in Germany like Bielefeld, Dresden and Jena. He is an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow. He has also been a Fellow of the Weimar Classics Foundation and a Fellow of the International Goethe-Gesellschaft. He is Vice- President, Goethe Society of India. He is a member of the Rilke- Gesellschaft, the Goethe- Gesellschaft and the International Association for Germanic Studies (IVG). He is also on the editorial board of several journals.
In research, he has sought to highlight the convergence of political philosophy and literature. His work on influential German poets like Rilke, Goethe, Schiller and Wieland serve to illustrate the importance of the multidisciplinary approach to the humanities.
