IIT Mandi Celebrated its 3rd Foundation Day on 24th February, 2012, at Kamand, the site of the 530-acre permanent  campus comping up on banks of River Uhl, 15 Km from Mandi town. The Director, Prof. T. A. Gonsalves highlighted the important achievements of the fast growing Institute. These include theoretical and experimental research publications by the young faculty, project fundings from DIT and DST, appreciation of research work benefiting local people and industry, strengthening of the already vibrant teaching community with more faculty members, as well as the supportive administrative staff. The students of IIT Mandi have made their strong presence felt in various inter-IIT activities, be it, academic competitions, sports or other cultural events.

Infrastructure is being developed on Kamand campus at a rapid pace beginning with setting up of various workshops and laboratories. February 2012 marks the start of academic activities at the Kamand campus with the commissioning of a workshop. It is housed in a 4000 sq ft renovated barn that had been used for many decades to house horses. The workshop is equipped with a CNC lathe, a CNC milling machine, and several conventional lathes, milling machines, etc. In a nearby lab that was formerly a horse stable, an X-Ray Diffractometer has been installed to support experimental research. It will be commissioned in March 2012. Costing about Rs. 1.7 crores, the instrument will be used for structural characterisation of powdered samples (The Powder x-ray diffractometer will be used for structural characterisation of crystalline materials which are in the powder form).

Students of IIT Mandi presented an exciting mix of cultural programs during the celebrations. A major highlight of the day was the song and dance presentation by primary school students of the local school. The registrar Dr. Sawhney presided over the awards distribution ceremony where Mrs. Gonsalves presented various awards and certificates to students, faculty and administrative staff. Against the backdrop provided by a setting sun, the students and the faculty members enjoyed variously a tug of war, ball games, etc. ending with a high tea.
