New Faculty Joined IIT Mandi

Dr. Rajeshwari Dutt has joined the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mandi as an Assistant Professor with appointment in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Dr. Dutt completed her Ph.D. degree in Social and Cultural History at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), USA, in May 2012. Prior to her Ph.D., Dr. Dutt completed her Master’s degree in Social and Cultural History also at CMU in 2007. Before embarking on graduate studies at CMU, Dr. Dutt completed an M. Phil at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata (CSSSCAL) in 2005. Dr. Dutt received her Bachelor’s (B.A.) degree in History at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, USA in 2004.

Dr. Dutt's research interests and expertise are in indigenous cultures and Latin American history. Her doctoral thesis explores the politics of indigenous Mayan leaders in Mexico’s Yucatan area in the nineteenth century. Dr. Dutt has also conducted research on peasant politics in India (in particular the Naxalite movement in Bengal) as well as questions of race and migration in the Caribbean. Dr. Dutt has published in journals such as Hispanic Horizon and Economic and Political Weekly (EPW). She is also the recipient of the Goldman Award for excellence in teaching at CMU in 2012.

Dr. Varun Dutt has joined the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mandi as an Assistant Professor with a joint appointment in the School of Computing and Electrical Engineering and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Prior to joining IIT, Mandi, Dr. Dutt was a post-doctoral fellow for a year in the Department of Social and Decision Sciences, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), USA.  Dr. Dutt completed his Ph.D. degree in Engineering and Public Policy from CMU in 2011. Prior to his Ph.D., he completed two different Master's degrees in Engineering and Public Policy, and Software Engineering from CMU. Also, he got his B.E. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Thapar University, Patiala in 2004.

Dr. Dutt has worked as a software engineer in Tata Consultancy Services. He is also currently the Knowledge Editor (in honorary capacity) of the English Financial daily, Financial Chronicle and has written more than 100 articles on technology, policy, sustainability, and entrepreneurship. Dr. Dutt's research interests are in judgment and decision making with particular applications to environmental decision making, dynamic decision making, cyber situation awareness, and computational modeling of human behavior in dynamic tasks like gambling, radar detection, managing climate change, and factory production and inventory. Dr. Dutt has been fortunate to find publications in top journals of international repute some of which include, Climatic Change, Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, Journal of Applied Cognitive Psychology, Games, Computers in Human Behavior, and Psychological Review. He has also presented his work in more than 40 national and international conferences.
