New Faculty

Dr.Ratan Joarder and Dr. Kaustav Mukherjee are the first two faculty members to settle directly at the Kamand campus (residence and office) without first serving at the Mandi transit campus.


Dr. Kaustav Mukherjee has joined IIT Mandi as an Assistant Professor in the School of Basic Sciences. His schooling and college up to M.Sc. were done in Kolkata, West Bengal. He obtained his Ph.D. in Physics in 2008 from UGC-DAE Consortium for Scientific Research, Indore. Next, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai from 2009 to 2012 and at Osaka University, Japan from 2012 to 2013. His research interest lies in investigation of the physical properties of rare-earth intermetallics and oxides, both in bulk and nano-form.


Dr. Ratan Joarder obtained his PhD and Master of Science (Engg.) degrees from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in the area of Aerospace Engineering. This was after a brief stint in a company called Sterlite Optical Technologies Ltd. which was based at Aurangabad, Maharastra following his graduation in Mechanical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology (the then Regional Engineering College), Durgapur. After his PhD, he worked at National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore as a Fellow for about one and a half year. Then Dr. Ratan moved to the German Aerospace center (DLR), Stuttgart, Germany and worked as a Post-Doc with a DLR-DAAD Fellowship for about two years. His area of interest includes supersonic combustion, shock tunnel, computational gas dynamics and chemically reacting Flows, laser Spark, alternative fuels etc.

Dr. Ratan likes to play a little bit of badminton and violin (Classical, Western) in his free time.
