Currently most cooking in Himachal villages is on open wood fires. Cooking on wood fires has three major drawbacks: The women spend a great deal of time collecting wood for their fires. The collection of wood depletes the forest . Many women suffer eye disease by the age of forty after years of cooking over fires in smoke filled kitchens. Till now schemes to introduce gas cooking have not succeeded. In the villages the men handle most of the money and transport. Thus, gas cylinders would cost them doubly in money and transport time. As they neither collect wood nor cook, the time spent collecting wood and the eye problems from excess exposure to smoke do not affect them directly.
