Personal Experiences - V. Vignesh

Learning blended with fun is always a welcome experience. My Ist year of college life in IIT Mandi at IITR campus was filled with moments of immense happiness, times of mighty experience and an everlasting sense of freedom.Frankly, IIT had its special charm.

Many of my college mates became my quick friends and I had learnt a lot of hindi hearing their conversations. Thus, the feeling of being a south Indian faded away quite unnoticeably. Besides, they were also much informative and talented. The strict culture at the hostel made me more time conscious, independent and brought some order in the routine. But I had to put up with the "messy" rotis and the sambhar in the mess and the mosquito haunted bathrooms. Many lecture classes were enjoyable as the teachers handled the concepts in an easy to understand manner, made classes interactive and entertained students' doubts immediately after classes. Some of the teachers used to share their life experiences and crack some jokes and that gave some relief. The morning practical classes and workshops were absolutely refreshing. For example, the Mechanical and Industrial Engg Workshop were we had to make some tools with heavy machines was thrilling and the group discussions and case studies in Humanities class tested our soft skills. The central library with its noiseless atmosphere, huge volumes of different and good books, periodicals, journals, air conditioned halls and reading room, computer centre was a great feast.I enjoyed reading many books there even if they were related to academics.

Any deficit of entertainment...not at all...the movies that we used to watch in groups at nights on laptops with dts speakers and the noisy procession from hostel to hotels outside for dinner and ice cream, the gossip session on controversial topics at midnight are some of my classic memories now.I loved jogging on the mega sports ground of the campus and playing tennis on the synthetic courts while others were engaged in football, volleyball, swimming and what not.I had attended some workshops, guest lectures by famous personalities from India and abroad and participated in some of institutes' major events like Cognizance,Shrishti where students from colleges all over India had come and workshops like SAE which were a big source of knowledge, motivation and guidance. For example,in the robotics event of Cognizance for which I had volunteered I learnt a lot about how to make robots from seniors and also got an idea of organization and leadership.I also enjoyed the cultural festivals of the institute like Thomso with its rock shows, fashion shows and hindustani and western performances in pehla nasha and swaranjali. On the whole,it was highly rocking journey that had to offer concepts for engineering, fun to the soul and experiences to life.
